Just read something interesting about creativity. It seems that so many people say, “oh I’m just not creative, yet nearly everyone hungers to express their creativity in some way.
In The Case Against Adolesence: Rediscovering the Adult in Every Teen by Robert Epstein, PhD, he discusses the relationship between conformity and creativity.
He writes, “Generally speaking, the children and adults who continue to express creativity at a high rate are the misfits, the risk-takers and authority-defyers who resist socialization. The children and adults who refuse to sit at a desk all day and who have trouble following instructions also tend to be the ones who express their creativity most often. This doesn’t mean that they’re inherently the most ‘creative’ but rather that in a society that shuts down creative expression through socialization, those who resist socialization are most likely to continue to express their new and crazy ideas.” (p. 254-255)
That’s just a snipet, he discusses creativity and inventiveness in teens, children and adults. It’s a fascinating book and I highly recommend it, though it may offend, as he does not shy away from any controversial subjects.
