Some people may think that jewelry is a frivolous thing, but some impressive volunteer projects out there show differently.

Beads of Courage brings beading to kids in the hospital with long term illnesses.

If you’ve ever been in the hospital, you know how boring it can be. For kids, it’s all the usual invasive and unpleasantness, but more stressful. So it’s great to see more programs out there to help kids.

Beads of Courage is a 501 (c) 3 corporation and is already working with a number of children’s hospitals throughout the country.

And they make it super easy to participate — you can donate focal art beads, or beads from your stash. There are lots of fiber arts programs with hospitals; most every kid in the hospital receives a handmade blanket, for example. It’s great to see the jewelry arts getting involved, and in an art therapy/child life way is even better.
