At the SCORE conference I attended last week, lots of business owners were talking about the challenges of working at home, or being a one person operation — the isolation, the challenge of getting things done without a team to motivate you.
Two websites to the rescue! Two sites offer a chance to post your goals publicly, one with consequences! I’ve personlly experienced the power of publicly stating I’m going to get something done — like NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month), which I publicly announced I would do, and I did complete it, and the art-a-day-challenge, which I didn’t commit to and didn’t finish.
So where can you post your goals? One option is the Weekly Goals section at The Switchboards. (Click Forums, then Weekly Goals.)
You do need to register in order to post at The Switchboards, but it’s free and quick. Even if you’re not sure yet if you want to post, go check out the goals, they may inspire you!
Another one is Motivation Mondays at eMoms at Home, The Internet Home Business Magazine for Moms and Dads.
Here’s how they describe Motivation Mondays:
Step 1 – let us know what you are going to get done today (your to-do list, so to speak).
Step 2 – put it in a comment below or a post on your own site.
Step 3 – let us know what will motivate you to get it done – a reward, consequences, or whatever you need to think that will ensure you do what you say you are going to do. I’ve found that the public announcement and accountability is a particularly great motivator, but throw down consequences if you really need a kick in the pants to get stuff done! Unless, of course, you are working towards a new laptop too, in which case I think the reward is particularly motivating.
We don’t care how you get it done, we just want to support you in reaching your goals.
That’s a post from Wendy Piersall, here’s the link.
She goes on to post her daily and weekly goals, and says that if she fails to get her stuff done, a reader will win a month’s worth of free advertising on her site.
So what do you think? Ready to post your goals to the world? Am I?
Post a comment and let everyone know if you think this approach will help you!
