Studio on the move
My studio is in a small room, 60 square feet, that it shares with this very computer and its desk. And, oh, it’s kind of cold in the winter.
The other day, my dear husband had the clever idea of moving my studio (and rather heavy jeweler’s bench) down to the basement, where I’d have more elbow room.
More importantly, it would be quiet and I’d be further away from potential interruptions.
I like this idea. A lot. Now I just have to make the time to pack, call the electrician to have some outlets installed, and schedule a moving day!
How about you? Do you like being far away from everyone else? or in the hustle and bustle?

I have to say that having had my studio in several places in the past 35 years…I am loving the arrangment that I have now. My big, main workspace is located in an old shoe building. The building is home to 50 other creative types…artists, musicians, photographers, framers…it’s a great place for inspiration and accountability. I also, however, have a room at my house which is handy for working late at night and then just falling down the hall into bed! I do think that there are many more interuptions at home…and other things that can get us distracted. I get much more accomplished at my “away from home” location.
my studio has been my dining table (seldom used) then a niche in a sunny extra room then when that was needed a side of the spare bedroom…..cats and dogs especially cats like to lie about in the midst of whatever I am working on…not good. As my christmas and Valentine gift he took time from finihing his own 1200 foot studio to carve out a real room at the back of the garage…10 by 11 with a window, door, ac/heater, bamboo floors and plenty of good lighting and dedicated circuit for my kiln and other hot items.
Into it will go my computer which is integral to all my creations, my bench, files, easel, paints, pots, etc and if the layout is on target a nice easy chair for ‘design thinking’…. cat and dog free zone ….
Wow, both of your spaces sound wonderful! Thanks for writing!
I still have kids at home so I need to be where I can still hear what’s happening in the house. Where I’m at is OK but I need more space and better light. So moving across the hall to my daughter’s room would be much better. Business is so busy right now that we probably won’t be switching rooms anytime soon, but I do dream of it. Enjoy your new space!
