Frequently on email discussion lists, folks will ask questions such as, “should I be sub-chapter S corp or an LLC?” or other simple questions whose answers can be found in terrific books like the ones by Barbara Brabec or from NOLO Press.

I always wonder if folks who ask those questions are aware of all the great resources put out by the SBA and SCORE?

That’s the Small Business Administration and the Service Corps of Retired Executives.

Nearly every big city has a SCORE office, which offers low cost workshops and FREE! one on one counseling with experienced, retired executives.

You may not hit it off with the first counselor you see — but don’t give up. Ask for someone else, try a different office. Some of those counselors are pure gold.

The SBA website has a ton of information, including the outline you’ll want to follow to write a business plan and marketing plan. They also have links to actual business plans.
