How Do You Get Any Work Done?

by Elaine Luther
When I need to focus on computer work, say, writing a blog post, or gathering digital images for a show entry — I find I focus a lot better if I turn off my email — I either go off line or close the program.
Much has been written about managing the distraction of email — whole books even — and Tim Ferris, author of the 4 Hour Work Week, has some suggestions on the topic. Okay, he doesn’t make suggestions, he has some very strong directives.
What do you do to help focus and get any work done? Please post a comment and let us all know!
Thanks!

The only way I can remove the distractions of emails when I have a deadline is to go “No Mail” on my groups. When I am past the deadline, I go back and turn them on.
I am pretty good at scanning and determining how useful the email is to me on any particular day, whether it is worth the time to read closely.
What was very time consuming was when I was a co-owner of a list. Then I felt I had a strong responsibility to focus attention on every post and make many replies. It bothered my daughter that I was so involved with my computer.
Now I don’t own any lists, and I can come and go at will. Also I don’t reply to a post on lists when all I am doing is saying any version of “me too”. If I can’t add something different or unique, I don’t post. This saves my time and the readers’.
