What’s Your Olympics?

Have you got Olympic fever? Me? Not so much, but I’m becoming more aware that it’s going on. Saw some gymnastics tonight.
But it got me thinking — I always admire the dedication of the Olympic athletes. Don’t you? Imagine dedicating so much time and years of your life to preparing for one contest.
And then I look at all the support the athletes have — the coaches, the family members, the unspoken bit about the incredible expenses over the years to get them to this point.
So what’s your Olympics? What’s your big jewelry goal? Will you try for the Masters Registry? Will you go for an MFA? Become a Certified Artisan? Take that workshop? What support do you need to get there? Who will be your coach?
What’s your gold medal going to be? Post a comment, won’t you?

Yeah, I’m not really feeling the Olympics this time around either. I don’t know if it’s because of socio-political issues or what. And, I’ve watched gymnastics for so many years that I’m just tired of seeing what looks like the same old routines.
In any case, I’m working on further defining “my Olympics” right now. It is, for the most part, becoming a “master craftsman.” But, I need to dig more into exactly what it means, what it means to me, how would I get there, etc. Researching all aspects of it at the moment because we don’t have a certifying body that I’m aware of in the US. I think they do in the UK per James Miller…
Oh, well the closest thing in the US is the Certified Master Bench Jeweler Program by JA, Jewelers of America. Check into that. There are varying levels, you work your way through, take bench tests at each stage.
Or you could do a low residency MFA with a local teacher/MFA as your teacher.
If you want to learn a new technique without traveling, you could subscribe to Bench Media’s web television channel. Let’s see, let me find the link for that…
Here’s a link to my post about it: here.
